  7. Identification: 16-42 in; Slender black or brown snakes with a tan to orange stripe down the back and a pale stripe on each side; pale parietal spot on top of head; belly whitish; scales keeled.

  9. Habits: Western Ribbon snakes occur in grassland and woodland habitats, often near a source of water.  Areas with ample sunlight are preferred.

  11. Distribution: Throughout Louisiana except Washington and northern St. Tammany parishes.

  13. Comments: These snakes are non-venomous. The picture of the Western ribbon snake above right depicts the snake in the marsh phase.
